Best way to heat your home – Gas boiler

Our View – Gas Boilers

If you are on gas grid, boilers are the cheapest way to heat your home in the long run. It can be pricey to switch over from electric heating, but the paybacks are good! The downsides are that extensive pipework is going to be needed if you don’t have radiators already, it can be costly to get hooked up to the mains gas grid (if not impossible), and you will need to have a spot to fit the boiler that complies with strict gas safety regulations. If you already have an old boiler, getting a new one fitted is often the cheapest and most efficient option.

Three reasons to go for a Gas Boiler

    • Three times cheaper than standard electric heating and the cheapest way to heat the average home.
    • Heat your hot water and rooms with the same system.
    • Lots of boilers on the market and a great amount of choice and price competition.

What are the best setups, brands and models of boiler?

With boilers, the key decision you need to make is whether or not you install a combi or a heat only boiler. We give you a full run down of the advantages and disadvantages of these setups here.

There are a vast array of brands and models, so it isn’t always easy to get it right! We have written a blog with our takes on boiler models here.

Expected returns on your installation

This will vary massively depending on the existing system, and the size of the property, but typical savings for switching from a 20+ year old model are around £100-300 per year. Switching from electric heating to gas will save you much more, and could better than halve your bill.

What is the cost of a new boiler

If you have a wet central heating system already, you just need to install the boiler, and that will cost you anywhere from £1,600 to £3,000 depending on the existing system and the pipework required. If you don’t have radiators already, you will be looking at a cost of £400 or so for every radiator fitted. You can find out much more about costing a new boiler here.
