How to Keep Your House Warm in Winter

When your home feels cold, the obvious answer is to turn the heating up.

And sometimes, that is exactly what you need to do. Nobody should be sitting in a home that feels uncomfortable just to save a few pounds.

But if your house feels cold even when the heating has been on for a while, the problem might not be the temperature on the thermostat.

It might be what your home is doing with the heat once it has been produced.

Because a warm home is not just about generating heat. It is about keeping hold of it.

The problem is not always your heating system

A lot of people assume that if their home is cold, the boiler or heating system must be the issue.

Sometimes that is true. An old boiler, poorly balanced radiators or inefficient heating controls can all affect comfort.

But in many homes, the heating system is doing its job. The real issue is that the heat is escaping too quickly.

That means your heating comes on, warms the air, then has to keep working because the house loses that heat through the walls, roof, floors, windows or draughty gaps.

So instead of heating your home once, you are constantly reheating it.

This is why two homes can have the thermostat set to the same temperature but feel completely different. One holds heat well. The other loses it almost as quickly as it is produced.

Start with draughts

Draughts are one of the simplest places to start because they are easy to feel.

Cold air coming in around doors, windows, floorboards, loft hatches, pipework or letterboxes can make a room feel uncomfortable, even when the heating is on.

Draught proofing helps reduce unwanted heat loss by sealing gaps that let cold air in. Energy Saving Trust says cutting draughts can make a home feel more comfortable and lower heating demand. 

The key word here is unwanted.

You still need proper ventilation. Extractor fans, air bricks, trickle vents and other planned ventilation points should not be blocked, as homes need airflow to manage moisture and indoor air quality.

But those random cold gaps that make your hallway feel like a wind tunnel? They are worth dealing with.

Make sure your heat is going where you need it

Heating controls can make a big difference to how efficiently your home uses energy.

A room thermostat, programmer and thermostatic radiator valves give you more control over when your heating comes on, how warm the home gets and which rooms need more or less heat.

Energy Saving Trust says turning a thermostat down by just one degree, from 22°C to 21°C, could save around £120 a year in Great Britain, provided it is still a comfortable and safe temperature for your home. 

That does not mean everyone should simply turn the heating down and put up with being cold.

It means small changes can matter when your heating is running for long periods.

For example, you may not need bedrooms as warm as living spaces during the day. You may not need the heating on as long if the house warms up quickly. You may also find that once draughts and insulation are improved, a slightly lower thermostat setting feels just as comfortable as a higher one did before.

Look up: your loft matters

Heat rises, so the roof is one of the main areas to think about.

If your loft or roof is poorly insulated, heat can escape upwards, making your home harder and more expensive to keep warm. Energy Saving Trust says loft insulation helps reduce heat loss through the roof, keeping the home warmer and cutting energy use. 

For many homes, loft insulation is one of the more straightforward insulation upgrades. It can be especially worth checking if your existing insulation is old, thin, patchy or has been moved around by stored items, trades or previous work.

Even if you already have some insulation, it may not be performing as well as it should.

A quick look in the loft can tell you a lot.

Walls can be a major source of heat loss

Once draughts and loft insulation are considered, walls are often the next big area.

This is especially true in older properties with solid walls. Solid walls do not have a cavity that can be filled, so they usually lose more heat than modern insulated wall constructions.

External wall insulation or internal wall insulation can help reduce heat loss through the walls, making the home feel warmer and more stable in temperature.

This is not usually the cheapest or quickest measure, but it can be one of the most significant, particularly for homes that are difficult to heat or cool down quickly once the heating switches off.

The aim is simple: slow the heat loss down.

When the building fabric performs better, the heating system does not have to work as hard to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Do not ignore hot water

Keeping warm is not only about the rooms in your home.

Hot water also uses energy, especially if you have a hot water cylinder that is poorly insulated or heated for longer than needed.

Energy Saving Trust notes that hot water cylinder insulation can help prevent wasted heat, particularly where older or thinner tank jackets are still in place

It is also worth looking at how your hot water is controlled. Heating a full tank of water when you do not need it, leaving an immersion heater on unnecessarily or running long showers every day can all add to your energy use.

Again, the point is not to make life uncomfortable.

It is about reducing waste.

Small habits still help, but they are not the whole story

There is nothing wrong with switching off lights, unplugging chargers or using appliances more carefully.

Those things can help, and they are good habits.

But if your home is cold, they are unlikely to solve the main problem.

A home that loses heat quickly will keep demanding more energy, no matter how careful you are with the smaller items.

That is why the biggest improvements usually come from looking at the building itself: draughts, insulation, heating controls and hot water efficiency.

The little habits are useful.

The bigger fabric improvements are what change how the home feels.

The real goal: comfort with less waste

A warmer home does not always mean a hotter thermostat.

In many cases, it means a home that holds heat better, feels less draughty and stays comfortable for longer after the heating switches off.

That is the difference between constantly chasing warmth and actually keeping it.

So before assuming the only answer is to turn the heating up, it is worth asking a better question:

Where is the heat going?

Because once you understand that, you can start making changes that improve comfort, reduce waste and help your home work better through the colder months.
